Basic properties and principles of PVPP
(I) Chemical structure and properties
PVPP is a high molecular weight polymer prepared by cross-linking polymerization of N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone monomers. Its structure contains a large number of lactam groups and has a three-dimensional network cross-linking structure. This special structure gives PVPP the characteristics of being insoluble in water and most organic solvents, but it can swell in water to form a gel-like substance. At the same time, it has excellent adsorption properties and can selectively adsorb organic compounds such as polyphenols and flavonoids.

(II) Principle of action
The adsorption of PVPP is mainly based on intermolecular hydrogen bonds, van der Waals forces, and steric hindrance effects. When encountering the target adsorbate, its internal network structure can capture and fix the molecules, thereby achieving the removal or separation of specific substances, achieving the purpose of purification and clarification.

The role of PVPP in the medical field
(I) Application in pharmaceutical preparations
Disintegrant: In the production of tablets and capsules, PVPP plays an important role as a super disintegrant. Compared with traditional disintegrants, PVPP swells rapidly after absorbing water, and its volume can increase by 2-3 times, generating a strong expansion force, which promotes the rapid disintegration of drugs. According to experimental data, the disintegration rate of tablets containing PVPP can reach more than 95% within 3 minutes, while the disintegration time of tablets using starch as a disintegrant is 10-15 minutes. This rapid disintegration characteristic helps to release drugs faster, improve bioavailability, and accelerate the onset of drug effects.
Adsorbent: In the process of some drug purification, PVPP can absorb impurities, pigments, and excess additives in drugs to improve drug purity. For example, in the refining of Chinese medicine extracts, it can effectively remove tannins, flavonoids and other components, reduce possible adverse reactions after taking, and improve drug safety.

(II) Optimization of pharmaceutical excipients
As a pharmaceutical excipient, PVPP can improve the stability and processing performance of drug preparations. In the production of granules, it can increase the compressibility and fluidity of the granules, prevent the granules from sticking together, and make the preparations more regular. At the same time, it does not react chemically with the drug, ensuring the stability of the drug ingredients and extending the shelf life of the drug.

The role of PVPP in the food and beverage industry

(I) Alcohol production

Beer clarification: In the beer brewing process, PVPP is a highly efficient polyphenol adsorbent. The combination of polyphenols in beer and proteins will cause beer turbidity and flavor deterioration, while PVPP can selectively adsorb polyphenols and reduce the occurrence of turbidity. Data show that adding 0.01% - 0.03% PVPP can reduce the turbidity of beer by 60% - 80%, extend the shelf life of beer, and extend the time it remains clear at room temperature from 2 - 3 months to 6 - 8 months.

Wine stabilization: For wine, especially red wine, PVPP can absorb anthocyanins and tannins, improve the taste and color stability of wine. Red wine treated with PVPP has a softer taste and less bitterness, while reducing color changes caused by oxidation and improving product quality.

(II) Juice and tea beverages
In the production of juice and tea beverages, PVPP can absorb phenolic substances, pigments and odor components, preventing the beverages from becoming turbid and precipitating during storage. For example, in apple juice production, after treatment with PVPP, the light transmittance of the product can be increased from 70% to more than 95%, while effectively inhibiting oxidative browning and maintaining the fresh color and flavor of the juice. In tea beverages, it can remove the precipitation produced by the oxidation of tea polyphenols, keeping the tea beverages clear and bright for a long time.

The role of PVPP in the field of daily chemicals
(I) Oral care products
In toothpaste and mouthwash formulas, PVPP can absorb odor substances and bacterial metabolites in the mouth, helping to improve breath. At the same time, it has a certain cleaning effect, can assist in removing pigmentation on the surface of teeth, and has the effect of whitening teeth. Experiments show that toothpaste with PVPP can reduce oral odor by 40% - 50% after 4 weeks of use.

(II) Skin care products
In skin care products, PVPP can be used as a thickener and stabilizer to adjust the rheological properties of the product, making the texture of products such as emulsions and gels more uniform and delicate. In addition, it can also absorb excess oil in skin care products, control the greasy feeling of the product, and improve the skin feel during use.

Application of PVPP in other fields
(I) Water treatment
During the water treatment process, PVPP can be used to remove organic pollutants and pigments from water. Its strong adsorption capacity can effectively adsorb phenols, dyes and other substances in water to purify the water quality. In the treatment of printing and dyeing wastewater, after treatment with PVPP, the COD (chemical oxygen demand) in the wastewater can be reduced by 30% - 50%, reducing the pressure of subsequent treatment.

(II) Industrial separation and purification
In the separation and purification links of chemical, pharmaceutical and other industrial fields, PVPP can be used as an adsorption resin to separate and purify the target components in complex mixtures. For example, in the production of antibiotics, the target antibiotic components can be effectively separated to improve the purity and yield of the product.

Industry data insights
(I) Market size and growth
According to statistics from market research institutions, the global PVPP market size will reach US$850 million in 2023 and is expected to grow to US$1.2 billion by 2028, with a compound annual growth rate of 7.2%. Among them, the food and beverage industry is the largest consumer sector, accounting for 45%; the pharmaceutical industry is closely behind, accounting for 30%.

(II) Application field share

Application areas Proportion Main functions
Food and beverages 45% Clarification of wine, stabilization of beverages
Medicine 30% Disintegration and purification of drugs
Daily chemicals 15% Oral care, thickening of skin care products
Others (water treatment, industrial separation, etc.) 10% Pollution adsorption, component separation

Development trend of PVPP
(I) Performance optimization and innovation
In the future, PVPP will develop in the direction of high performance and high selectivity. Through modification technology, its adsorption capacity and specificity can be further improved to meet the needs of more complex scenarios. For example, a modified PVPP with stronger adsorption capacity for specific substances can be developed for application in high-end medicine and food processing.

(II) Green production and sustainable development
With the improvement of environmental protection requirements, the green production technology of PVPP will become the focus of research and development. Explore more environmentally friendly polymerization processes and raw materials, reduce energy consumption and pollutant emissions in the production process, and achieve sustainable development. At the same time, improve the recycling rate of PVPP and reduce resource waste.

(III) Cross-field application expansion
With the integration of technologies in various industries, the application of PVPP in emerging fields will continue to be explored. For example, in the fields of new energy battery diaphragm materials, biomedical materials, etc., its unique adsorption and stability properties are expected to be newly applied, bringing new opportunities for industry development.
