NVP homopolymer, commonly known as Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), is formed through the free-radical polymerization of N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone (NVP) monomers. Its repeating structural unit consists of a carbon–carbon backbone derived from the vinyl group, with a pendant lactam (pyrrolidone) ring attached to every repeating unit. The chemical structure can be represented as –[CH₂–CH]ₙ–, where the side group contains a five-membered pyrrolidone ring featuring a polar amide (–CONH–) functionality. This unique structure gives NVP homopolymer excellent water solubility, strong hydrogen-bonding capability, film-forming performance, and broad compatibility with active ingredients, making it widely used in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, coatings, adhesives, and industrial formulations.
